Shanghai 1990s

This is Shanghai 30 years ago in the 1990s, recaptured in the recently aired hit Chinese TV drama Blossoms Shanghai (繁花), a masterpiece that brings back a thriving yet confused city at a crossroads, half socialism half capitalism.

In one version, all actors and actresses speak in Shanghai tongue or other dialects based on their backgrounds, which adds authenticity to the story. The performances of the leading and supporting actors and actresses are just marvellously convincing.

The 30-epsode TV drama was directed by Wong Kar-wai (王家卫) with leading cast including Hu Ge (胡歌), Tang Yan (唐嫣), Xin Zhilei (辛芷蕾), Ma Yili (马伊利), Chen Long (陈龙), Dong Yong (董勇) and a 90-year-old legendary You Benchang (游本昌) who plays 70-year-old Uncle (爷叔).
