This Sichuan Boatman Song (川江号子) is sung by Dao Lang (刀郎), one of the world’s greatest songwriters, musicians and singers, during his 2024 nation-wide concert tour in Sichuan where boatman songs originated.

In the old days, when a boat needed to navigate a difficult section of waterway or faced counter currents, a headman would lead the crew to sing a boatman song, as a way to organise his men working in a coordinated fashion.
